Transforming stories of migration, memory, and belonging into immersive works of art.
Dr. Hyacinth Paul is a contemporary artist whose interdisciplinary practice explores migration, memory, belonging, and mental wellbeing through painting, participatory textile installations, and community engagement. Inspired by the power of color to evoke emotion, joy, and connection, she creates immersive works that invite viewers to reflect on their own stories while discovering common ground with others.
After a distinguished career as a scientist and professor, Hyacinth embraced art as a second vocation, completing more than fifty-eight paintings during her fifty-eighth year. Today, her practice has evolved far beyond painting to encompass large-scale installations, oral history, education, and public participation, bringing together art, science, and lived experience in meaningful ways.
Her signature projects, Udaan: Stories that Rise and The Great Banyan Tree of Dayton, transform donated saris and personal stories into evolving installations that celebrate resilience, cultural identity, and our shared human experience. Through these works, participants become collaborators, weaving their own histories into a collective visual narrative that honors ancestry, preserves memory, and builds bridges across cultures.
Since 2019, Hyacinth has exhibited in more than forty-nine solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States, received numerous grants, artist residencies, and awards, and developed innovative arts integration programs that connect contemporary art with education and community wellbeing. Her work has been exhibited nationally and is held in private, corporate, and public collections.
Color is at the heart of Hyacinth's artistic practice. Influenced by her lifelong fascination with synesthesia—the relationship between color, emotion, and human perception—she believes art has the power to inspire hope, strengthen mental wellbeing, encourage dialogue, and foster empathy. Whether creating vibrant abstract and representational paintings or immersive participatory installations, her goal is to create spaces where people feel seen, connected, and inspired.
Hyacinth is the founder of Dayton for the Arts, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the transformative role of art in mental health, education, and community engagement. Through exhibitions, artist residencies, public art projects, and educational initiatives, she continues to advocate for the arts as an essential part of a healthy and connected society.
"Every story matters. Every thread belongs. Every color has the power to connect us."
"My art is inspired by the sheer beauty that exists in our world." - Hyacinth Paul
