The Promise 24X22 Oil on Canvas by Hyacinth Paul

The promise is a study of the effect of light on a painting. I was studying the underground railroad and thought of putting my imaginings of the slaves escaping to freedom in an upright position instead of a bent, almost "running scared" position. Hence "The Promise". I will be developing this idea with a series of paintings in remembrance of the underground railroad system. Notice the whip marks on the back of the slave, but he stills holds his head high despite the brutality unleashed on him, and that is "The Promise"
