Did you know artists need to learn the “Art of The Sale?”

Who knew?

As the canvases started piling up and taking over my life and my kitchen space, the hardest of all realities sunk in.  What do I do with all this art?  It certainly loses its charm, packed tightly in a small gallery space or worse, taking over not just my home but my life as well!

I thought it was enough to create good art, take good pictures, describe the art, stay in touch with your potential buyers and fans, and create contests and clever giveaways!

As if this was not enough, I had to learn everything I could to sell art. Pick a website platform,  create a website, merchandise, get social, participate in art fairs, create more great art… the list goes on.

Exasperated, I dove in.

“You have to master social media,” they said.

A little bird told me to Tweet away, Pin and then instantaneously I had to Instagram, learn SEO and write blogs! Look who’s inching up!?

To add insult to injury, I had to figure out the algorithms of google. But that’s not all!  The google bots had to be pacified and cajoled into just looking into my hard work!

It’s all a game folks!  Darwin was right all along.  It is hands down “survival of the fittest!”

So stop complaining, chin up and figure out the “Art of the sale!”

Looks are deceptive, but this blog is purposefully short… or is it?

That’s all folks!

As always, be curious and create!

These are all the things that many small business owners have to do nowadays to succeed. Technically, one can be an artist and never have to hustle the internet or worry about SEO and sales funnels. Most artists I know don't make a living from their artwork. They teach and/or have spouses with steady income. I went full time as an artist a year ago and I am just now starting to see my marketing efforts pay off. It's a long term game. And I spend 80 percent of my work time on marketing, not on painting. Hang in there. I can see that you work hard and are dedicated to your career. It will happen :)

Hi Hyacinth, I agree it is overwhelming. The idea that you can dip your into a professional career as an artist and make sales seems so far away. Michael Craig-Martin said, -The secret of success is longevity. When you're 20, there are 50,000 other artists, by the time you're 30, its down to 5,000, by 40, it's 2,000. If you make it to 70 there are only 12 of you left and you're all famous.” His book 'Being an Artist,' is an interesting read. Reflecting the real and hard challenges artist face. Kind regards Stuart

Dear Tatyana and Stuart, So very kind of you to post a comment here! I am honored that you would take the time to comment! Yesterday an artist friend of mine asked me to write about marketing and considering I am new at this, I resorted to my cheat sheets aka links! This is overwhelming for anybody, let alone someone who is trying to find their feet! I thought I'd do a funny little post instead of the serious subjects, I am inclined to! I certainly will read being an artist! Thank you for your time and words of wisdom! Hyacinth
